Smart Trainer Thru-Axle Compatibility
Almost every disc-brake bike sold in the last decade has a thru-axle, and almost every trainer supports it — but which widths, with which adapters, and with which exceptions is buried in support articles. Here it is in one place.

A thru-axle is a solid, threaded rod that passes through the hub and screws into the frame, replacing the quick-release skewer that older bikes used. It arrived with disc brakes and it is now the default on almost everything with a rotor. The complication for indoor training is that a trainer has to hold the rear of the frame where the wheel normally sits, and the trainer's fitting has to match the width of your dropouts, the diameter of your axle and, on a wheel-on unit, the thread of your frame. Get any of those wrong and the bike either does not mount or, worse, mounts crooked.
This guide is compiled from the compatibility and specification pages Wahoo, Garmin, Elite and Saris publish, linked in the sources. We have not fitted these bikes to these trainers ourselves. Where a manufacturer says a standard is unsupported, we say so; where it is silent, we say that too.
Step one: identify your standard
You need two numbers: the axle diameter and the dropout width. Both are usually printed on the axle itself or on the frame near the dropout; failing that, the bike's specification page lists them. The common rear standards are:
10 x 130 mm quick release — rim-brake road bikes. 10 x 135 mm quick release — older mountain bikes and hybrids. 12 x 142 mm thru-axle — disc-brake road, gravel, cyclocross, and older disc mountain bikes; by far the most common thru-axle. 12 x 148 mm Boost — most mountain bikes from about 2016 on. 12 x 157 mm Super Boost — some downhill, enduro and plus-tire bikes. 12 x 135 mm— a legacy standard, including Specialized's SCS. There are rarer ones — 10 x 120 track, 10 x 126 pre-8-speed road, 10 x 141 Boost QR — and the makers mostly exclude them, as the table shows.
Step two: understand how a direct-drive trainer holds a thru-axle bike
On a direct-drive trainer the wheel comes off and the frame mounts onto the trainer's freehub axle. The trainer ships with cups or adapters of different widths that screw onto each end of that axle to match your dropouts, and you then pass your bike's own thru-axle through the dropouts and the adapters and tighten it as you would on the wheel. Wahoo's compatibility table says exactly this — 12 x 142 uses adapters C and D "plus your bike's thru axle," 12 x 148 uses C and E — and Garmin and Elite work the same way. Which means you do not need to buy a special axle for a direct-drive trainer; you need the right width adapters, and the question is whether they are in the box.

Step three: check the exceptions
Width and diameter are not the whole story, because some frames have dropouts, chainstays or brake mounts shaped in a way that fouls the trainer body even when the axle standard matches. Wahoo is the only maker here that publishes a list. Its compatibility article names bikes that do not fit any Kickr or Core — several 2021-22 Bianchi disc models, the rim-brake Canyon Ultimate, the 2015 Specialized Crux Expert Evo, the 2023-25 Trek Domane+ ALR-5 and any bike using Trek's 141 mm bolt-on standard, and any bike on the Mahle X20 hub interface — plus a longer list of frames that only fit Kickrs from version 4 (2018) onward. It also says, in so many words, that grinding parts down or adding washers to make a frame fit voids the warranty. If your bike is on that list, no adapter helps; you need a different trainer or a wheel-on unit.
Garmin and Elite publish no equivalent list. For a frame with unusual dropouts — deep aero-section chainstays, flat-mount brake tabs that sit very close to the axle, an integrated derailleur hanger — a test fit at a shop is the only certainty.
Wheel-on trainers are the harder case
A wheel-on trainer clamps the bike by its rear axle between two cups, which was easy when every bike had a quick-release skewer the trainer could replace. A thru-axle bike needs either a replacement axle with ends shaped for the trainer's cups, or an adapter that fits over your existing axle. Saris sells its thru-axle adapter separately for 142 and 148 mm bikes and ships the Fluid2 set for 120, 130 and 135 mm quick release. Elite lists thru-axle fittings for the Tuo. In either case the replacement part has to match your frame's thread — thru-axles come in several thread pitches and lengths — so check the part against your bike's specification, not just the width. This is the single most common reason a wheel-on trainer arrives and the bike does not go on.
Whether the wheel-on route is worth it at all is a separate question that direct drive vs wheel-on answers; for a thru-axle bike the direct-drive path is simply less fiddly.

Mountain bikes, e-bikes and the odd cases
Boost 148 is now the standard mountain bike axle, and the Core 2 and Neo 2T ship the adapter; the freehub and cassette are the bigger problem for a mountain bike, which our mountain bike trainer roundup works through. Super Boost 157 is rare enough that only Elite lists an adapter. For e-bikes, Wahoo's rule is that the bike must be on a supported standard, the motor must be off, the combined weight of rider, bike and battery must be under 250 lb, and the bike maker must have no objection to the frame being used on a stationary trainer — which is worth reading as a general statement of how the makers think about trainer weight limits. If your bike is on a standard nobody lists, the honest answer is a wheel-on trainer with a matching adapter, or the Kickr Rollr, which never touches the axle at all.
The order to do this in
Read the axle. Check the width and diameter against the table above. If the trainer includes the adapter, order the trainer. If the adapter is an accessory, order it in the same basket. If the maker excludes the standard, or names your frame, choose a different trainer rather than a workaround. Then fit the bike gently the first time, confirm it sits square and nothing touches the trainer body except at the adapters, and only then ride hard. The Neo 2T is supplied with a direct-drive quick release and an adapter set for 142 x 12 and 148 x 12, with a 10 x 135 adapter available separately. In practice that covers the same field as the Core 2. What Garmin does not publish is a Wahoo-style list of specific frames that foul the trainer body, so for an unusual disc-brake frame you are relying on a test fit. Elite's Rivo spec page splits its fittings into included (quick release 5 x 130-135 and thru-axle 12 x 142) and available (10 x 135 to 12 x 135, Specialized SCS 12 x 135, Boost 12 x 148 and Super Boost 12 x 157). The Avanti lists the same set. That accessory list is the longest on this page, and it is the reason a rider on an unusual standard should look at Elite first. Wheel-on trainers are where thru-axle bikes most often get stuck, because the classic design clamps a quick-release skewer between two cups. Do smart trainers work with thru-axle bikes?
Yes. Every direct-drive trainer in our registry supports 12 x 142 mm thru-axle, and the Wahoo Kickr Core 2, Tacx Neo 2T and Elite Rivo all ship the adapter in the box. You pass your bike's own thru-axle through the trainer's adapter cups. Boost 148 is included with the Core 2 and Neo 2T and sold separately by Elite.
Do I need a thru-axle adapter for a smart trainer?
For a direct-drive trainer you need width adapters that match your dropouts, and they are usually included for 142 and 148 mm. You use your bike's own axle. For a wheel-on trainer you typically need a separate thru-axle adapter or replacement axle — Saris sells one for 142 and 148 mm bikes — and it must match your frame's thread.
Which smart trainers support 12 x 148 Boost?
The Wahoo Kickr Core 2 and Kickr (adapters C and E, included), the Tacx Neo 2T (adapter set included) and the Elite Rivo and Avanti (Boost adapter sold as an accessory). Elite also lists a Boost fitting for the Tuo wheel-on trainer.
Which smart trainers support Super Boost 157?
Of the makers we cover, only Elite lists a Super Boost 12 x 157 adapter, for the Rivo and Avanti. Wahoo explicitly lists 12 x 157 as unsupported on the Kickr and Core; Garmin does not list it for the Neo.
Do I use my own thru-axle on a direct-drive trainer?
Yes. Wahoo's compatibility table specifies that 12 x 142 and 12 x 148 bikes use the trainer's adapters plus your bike's thru-axle, and Garmin and Elite trainers mount the same way. The trainer supplies the width adapters; you supply the axle.
Why does my thru-axle bike not fit a wheel-on trainer?
Wheel-on trainers clamp the axle ends between two cups designed for a quick-release skewer. A thru-axle bike needs a replacement axle or adapter shaped for those cups, and it must match your frame's thread pitch and length. Buying the width-correct adapter with the wrong thread is the most common cause.
