Who writes this

Spin & Sprocket is written by Stephen V., an enthusiast who is genuinely into indoor training. No lab coat, no tenure, no "certified" anything. What I do have is a habit: when I want to upgrade a specific weakness in my own setup, I read the whole manual, compile the published specs, and do the watt math before I spend a dollar. This site is that habit, made public.

I am not going to tell you I have twenty trainers stacked in a garage and a torque wrench with my name on it. Plenty of good sites earn their authority that way, and where their hands-on numbers exist we will point you to them. What we offer instead is a method you can re-run yourself, and complete honesty about where our knowledge stops.

What this site is for

Spin & Sprocket exists for one reader: the cyclist who already rides, who knows what ERG mode and a direct-drive flywheel are, and who is trying to fix one specific thing — a wheel-on trainer that howls, a power number that drifts, a setup that will not hold a workout on Zwift. You are not starting from zero. You are upgrading, and you want the trade-off that actually matters, not a wall of marketing copy.

So our job is narrow and useful: gather every published specification that bears on the decision — resistance ceiling, simulated gradient, flywheel mass, claimed power accuracy, connectivity, noise where a maker publishes it — line the models up side by side, do the cost-per-watt and accuracy-per-dollar math, and tell you which one we would buy for which rider. We name the "skip this" pick as readily as the winner, because that is the part a store will never tell you.

The honest part

Here is the line we refuse to blur: the number of units we claim to have bench-tested is zero. Everyone in this category says they tested twenty trainers in a lab. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead was read every manual, compile every published spec and accuracy figure, aggregate disclosed owner feedback where it is properly cited, and show the arithmetic so you can check it. We think an honest "here is what we compiled" is worth more than an unverifiable "trust us, we tested it."

How the site is funded

Spin & Sprocket makes money through affiliate links. When you follow one of our outbound links to Amazon or another retailer and buy something, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That is the entire business model, and we are glad to be plain about it.

The commission never decides a pick. Our recommendations come from the spec compilation and the math, and a product that pays a higher rate gets no advantage over one that pays nothing.
