How we choose our picks

Most review sites in this category open with a number: "we tested twenty trainers." We open with a different one. The count of units Spin & Sprocket claims to have bench-tested is zero — and rather than bury that, we lead with it, because a method you can reproduce is worth more than a lab you have to take on faith. This page is the whole method, in the open.

What we do

For every trainer, power meter, or piece of pain-cave gear we cover, we build the decision from primary sources:

• Compile every published spec.Resistance ceiling (max watts), maximum simulated gradient, flywheel mass, claimed power accuracy (the ±% the maker prints), connectivity (Bluetooth, ANT+, direct Zwift support), weight, and noise where a manufacturer publishes it.
• Pull the manuals and spec sheets. We read the manufacturer manual, the spec page, and firmware notes, not the press release — and we cite the figure to its source so you can see where it came from.
• Aggregate disclosed owner feedback. Where owner reports or third-party measurements are properly cited, we summarize them and label them as such — never as our own testing.
• Do the math. Cost-per-max-watt, accuracy-per-dollar, and a consistent road-feel and value rubric applied identically across every model, so the comparison is apples-to-apples and the arithmetic is on the page.

What we do not do

We do not claim hands-on testing, an owned test unit, a lab, or a measured accuracy verdict of our own. We do not invent a credential, fabricate a rating, or quote a review count we cannot source. If a maker does not publish a figure, we write "manufacturer does not publish this" rather than guess. Stating the boundary of what we know is the point, not a footnote.

Then why trust us?

Fair question — zero is the whole reason. Because we take no free units and no sponsored placements, nothing tilts a pick except the specs and the math. And because we did not run a private lab, everything a pick rests on is public: the manufacturer figures we compiled, the manuals we read, and the cost-per-watt and accuracy-per-dollar calculations we show. You do not have to trust a number we measured behind a closed door — you can re-run ours. That reproducibility, not a lab coat, is the trust we are offering.

How picks are chosen

Every roundup uses the same transparent rubric. We score each model on the same criteria — value against its resistance ceiling and accuracy claim, connectivity and app fit, road feel as inferred from flywheel mass and gradient, and noise — then let the reader see the inputs. A "best overall" pick has to win on the criteria we published, not on a hunch. Because the inputs are visible, a reader who weighs accuracy over road feel can reach a different, equally defensible pick — and we would rather that than pretend there is one right answer for everyone.

How we handle prices

Prices come from a live pricing layer, not from memory. When a current price is available we show it; when it is not, we show "Check price" and send you to the retailer for the real, current number. We never quote a stale price and hope it still holds — an out-of-date number is worse than no number, so we do not print one.

How we make money

How often we update

Every flagship roundup and comparison gets a quarterly refresh: we re-check live prices and availability and add models that have shipped since. We also update on events — when a significant product launches or is discontinued, we revise the affected pages within days and re-date them. Price integrity runs continuously through the live pricing layer, so what you see is current rather than frozen at publish time.
