How to Calibrate a Smart Trainer
Ten minutes of easy riding, one button, thirty seconds. Almost everyone gets the first part wrong, which is why their power numbers wander from week to week.

A smart trainer estimates your power from how hard its resistance unit is working and how fast the flywheel is turning. Both of those depend on the trainer's own internal friction — belt tension, bearing drag, the resistance unit's magnetic characteristics — and all of them change with temperature and with age. Calibration is how the trainer measures its own current drag so it can subtract it from what it reports as your effort.
What a spindown actually measures
The routine is deceptively simple. The app asks you to pedal up to a specified speed, then stop pedaling entirely and let the flywheel coast to a halt. The trainer times that deceleration.
A flywheel with very little internal drag coasts for a long time. One with tight bearings, a tight belt or cold, thick grease stops sooner. That coast-down time is a direct measurement of the trainer's internal friction at that moment, and once the trainer knows that number it can work out how much of the load you are feeling is you and how much is the machine.
This is why the warm-up matters so much. A cold trainer has meaningfully more internal drag than a warm one. Calibrate cold and the trainer builds its model around a friction figure that will not be true five minutes into your ride — and then reports your power against that wrong baseline for the entire session.
The routine, step by step
1. Ride easily for about ten minutes. Not hard, just moving. You are warming the belt, the bearings and the flywheel, not yourself, so an easy spin is fine. This is the step everyone skips and the one that determines whether the rest is worth doing.
2. Open the calibration routine.This lives in the manufacturer's app on most trainers, and inside Zwift or TrainerRoad on some. Either is fine; do not run both.
3. Follow the speed prompt.The app will ask you to accelerate to a target speed — often around 37 km/h or 23 mph, though it varies by brand. Get there smoothly rather than sprinting to it.
4. Stop pedaling completely. Not soft-pedaling, not resting your feet on the pedals. Any input at all corrupts the coast-down measurement.
5. Wait for the result, and note it. As with a power meter, the value itself is meaningless in isolation but very useful over time — a spindown time that has drifted a long way from its usual range is the earliest warning you will get of a mechanical problem.

Which trainers do not need this
Several higher-end trainers calibrate themselves continuously and expose no spindown routine at all. The Tacx Neo 2T needs no calibration by design, because its resistance is generated directly by electromagnets rather than through a belt and flywheel, so there is far less variable mechanical drag to account for. Mid-tier trainers such as the Kickr Core generally use a manual spindown. This is a genuine, if unglamorous, reason to spend up — not because auto-calibration is more accurate in principle, but because the calibration people actually run is the one that happens without being remembered. Trainer calibration and power meter calibration are different things
If you own both, do not confuse the two routines, because they measure completely different quantities.
A power meter zero offsethappens at a standstill with your feet off the pedals, and it establishes what "no force" reads. A trainer spindown happens after a warm-up ride and measures mechanical drag. If you have both devices, the tidiest arrangement is to use the power meter as your power source in the app and the trainer as the controllable device. That gives you one consistent number indoors and outdoors, and the trainer's own measurement stops mattering for your training records — though you should still calibrate it, because ERG modetargets are still set against the trainer's own reading unless the app is configured otherwise.
What calibration will not fix
Dropouts and disconnections. Those are radio problems, not measurement problems. Start with our connection troubleshooting guide.
A trainer that does not change resistance. That is a pairing issue — the trainer must be paired as a controllable device, not just as a power source.
A permanent gap between your trainer and your power meter. A few percent is expected and normal, because they measure at different points in the drivetrain: the meter reads what you applied, the trainer reads what survived the chain. Our accuracy guide covers this in full.
A genuinely faulty unit. If your spindown time has moved a long way from its usual value and will not come back after a proper warm-up, something mechanical has changed — a belt, a bearing, or debris in the unit. That is a conversation with the manufacturer, and the spindown history you noted is the evidence that makes it a short one.
Wheel-on trainers need one extra step
If your trainer is wheel-on rather than direct drive, calibration is only half the job, because the roller-to-tire interface is a variable the trainer cannot see.
Set your tire pressure to the same value every single ride, and set the roller tension the same way each time — most manufacturers specify a number of turns past first contact. Change either and your power numbers move, regardless of how carefully you calibrated. A dedicated trainer tire also helps, because a consistent, slow-wearing compound gives a more stable contact patch than a road tire that is actively degrading.
