Cycling vs Running: Which Should You Do Indoors?
One loads your skeleton every stride; the other never does. That single difference decides how often you can train, how quickly you recover, and how precisely you can measure any of it.

This comparison usually gets argued as though one activity is objectively superior, which is not a useful frame. Running and cycling are both excellent, and they load your body in fundamentally different ways. The interesting question — especially for someone building an indoor setup — is what each one costs you, and what you can actually sustain.
Everything below flows from one physical fact. When you run, your body weight lands through your legs on every stride, thousands of times an hour. When you cycle, it does not: your weight is supported by the saddle and the pedals, and the muscular work happens without impact. That single difference explains the injury rates, the recovery cost, the training volumes, and why the answer changes when you move both activities indoors.
Impact, and what it costs and buys
Impact is not simply bad. Weight-bearing loading is the stimulus that maintains bone density and strengthens tendons, and cycling's lack of it is a genuine drawback for long-term skeletal health — a well-known concern among riders who do nothing else. If you cycle exclusively, some form of loading elsewhere in your week is worth having, whether that is running, walking or resistance training.
What impact costs you is repeatability. Running hard on consecutive days is how most recreational runners get injured, because the tissue that absorbs the landing needs longer to adapt than your cardiovascular system does. Your heart and lungs are ready before your Achilles is.
Cycling has no such ceiling. You can ride hard, ride again the next morning, and ride the day after that. The limit is muscular and metabolic rather than structural, and it is a much higher limit. Time efficiency: running's real advantage
Minute for minute, running asks more of you. You are moving your entire body mass against gravity rather than turning a crank while seated, and the muscular recruitment is broader — calves, hamstrings, glutes, core and stabilizers all working to control each landing.
The practical consequence is that a short run is a more complete session than a short ride. If you have thirty minutes and no other constraint, running gives you more stimulus. This is why time-limited people often gravitate to it, and it is a legitimate reason.
The counterweight is what happens on day two. That same stimulus, delivered through impact, takes longer to absorb — so the thirty-minute run that beat a thirty-minute ride may cost you the next day's session. Over a week, cycling's lower per-minute cost usually adds up to more total training, not less.
Why cycling is far easier to train precisely
This is where the gap becomes large, and it is the reason a serious indoor setup is built around a bike rather than a treadmill.
A smart trainer measures the actual work you are doing in watts, typically to within a few percent, and it can control the resistanceso a workout executes exactly as written. Running measures pace, and pace is a proxy for effort rather than a measure of it. The same pace is a wildly different effort uphill, into wind, on soft ground, or when you are tired. On a treadmill the surface is controlled, which helps enormously — but treadmill belts are calibrated inconsistently, the belt assists your leg turnover slightly, and the numbers still do not transfer cleanly between machines. Running power meters exist and are improving, but they are modeling your output rather than measuring torque in a drivetrain.

Indoors specifically, cycling is the better citizen
Move both activities inside and cycling's advantages compound.
Noise. A treadmill transmits footfall into the structure of the building, which is the kind of noise neighbors actually complain about. Footprint. A treadmill is large and permanent. A trainer plus a bike is smaller, and some trainers fold away entirely.
Engagement. Indoor running is famously monotonous. Indoor cycling has a mature software ecosystem — Zwift and TrainerRoad among others — that turns a stationary hour into a race, a group ride or a structured session that runs itself. Heat. Both suffer indoors, because you lose the airflow that carries your heat away. Both are transformed by a high-velocity fan, which remains the single highest-return purchase in any indoor training room.
Does one help the other?
Partly, and the asymmetry is worth knowing.
Cycling helps running more than running helps cycling. The aerobic base you build on a bike — cardiac output, capillary density, mitochondrial adaptation — transfers usefully to running, and it is built without adding impact to already-loaded tissue. Injured runners routinely maintain fitness on a trainer for exactly this reason, and many use it deliberately in healthy periods to add volume without adding pounding.
Running helps cycling less directly, but not zero. It maintains bone density, it recruits muscles that cycling neglects, and it keeps you moving through ranges of motion a rider spends the winter avoiding. What it does not do is make you faster on a bike in any efficient way; the specific muscular patterns do not transfer well, and the recovery cost eats into the riding you would otherwise do.
For a cyclist, the sensible arrangement is riding as the volume with a small amount of running or resistance work for the loading you are otherwise missing.
For general fitness and weight management
This question comes up constantly and the honest answer is unsatisfying: the difference between the two matters far less than whether you actually do the thing.
Running expends more energy per minute, which sounds decisive until you account for how much of it you can do. Cycling lets you accumulate far more total time — because it does not beat up your joints, because it can be done on consecutive days, and because indoors it is genuinely more pleasant. Total energy expended across a month is a function of consistency, and consistency is a function of whether the activity is sustainable and enjoyable for you specifically.
Cycling also has a lower barrier at higher body weights, where impact loading is a real limiting factor and injury risk is meaningfully elevated. For many people starting out, the bike is the activity that is still happening in six weeks.

So which should you do?
Choose cycling if you have joint concerns, if you want to train most days, if you want structured sessions you can measure and repeat, if you live somewhere with neighbors below you, or if you already own a bike and like riding it.
Choose running if your time is severely limited, if you want the bone-loading stimulus, or if you simply prefer it — which is a completely sufficient reason and the one most likely to keep you doing it.
