Cycling vs Rowing: Which Indoor Machine Should You Choose?

These two machines are less similar than their shared category suggests. One is a single repeated joint action with almost no technique barrier; the other is a coordinated whole-body sequence that rewards good form and punishes bad form. Technique: the barrier nobody warns you about
Cycling has essentially no technique barrier. Sit down, turn the pedals, and you are training within thirty seconds. Bike fit matters over hours, but nobody hurts themselves in week one through poor pedaling form.
Rowing is different. The sequence — legs, then hips, then arms, reversing on the recovery — is easy to describe and easy to do badly, and the classic error of opening the back before the legs have finished driving loads the lumbar spine under fatigue. A trainer setup takes roughly the space of a bike and can be broken down, though most people leave it built because taking it down is the fastest way to stop using it.
